All courses are based on working in the land and take place in July and September 2014. Each will respond to the qualities of the seasons.
A typical day will involve informally tutored sessions from 10 to 5 with a break for a communal lunch. We will spend time working outside on local beaches and woodland or in the old laundry studios. Walks on varied ground will involve more observation than exertion. Evenings can be spent working untutored in the studio, exploring alone, or with the group preparing and enjoying the evening meal.
The courses aim to strengthen and develop our ability to observe, interpret and express ourselves whatever the perceived ability in art. They are for all levels of experience: suitable for complete beginners and offering an opportunity for the more experienced worker to refresh their skills. Previous students will find a degree of progression within these courses and new activities to explore.
The structure is flexible and will respond to the needs and interests of individual participants. The emphasis will be on the pleasure of discovering and experimenting. Focusing on specific environments around Brynddu participants will, through set exercises, develop and deepen their understanding of place and the qualities of natural materials. The remoteness of this Celtic landscape will allow for both rest and creative play. For many these courses will be a personal journey.
Insperation comes from the land itself but we were introduced to the works of Andy Goldsworthy, Richard Long and other land artists through books, video and discussion.
Alongside working on the land we will also explore recording walks and experiences in the form of simple journals, which for some become the focus of the course.
Some tools and materials will be provided by the tutors and a list of appropriate things to bring will be provided for each course. Certain other materials will be available. Since we will be walking and working in the landscape we recommend suitable clothing and footwear for all weathers.
“The course was excellent with a good mix of structure and freedom, experiential work and background material.
It was out of this world, the house and grounds are unique, -beautiful and homely at the same time. I felt very welcomed and given permission to explore the space.
The studio environment was enticing and facilitating.
Thank you both so much for such a well designed, thoughtful experience.”
